Appears to be an issue with googlecode. Workaround available:
libgit2/libgit2#1304

Will try patching libgit2 to see if this works.

Upgraded to latest libgit2 and applied patch. This appears to fix the issue. Closing for now.

It turns out this patch causes some unexpected side effects when updating some repos from github. Need to look into this further.
