Automatically have certain node expanded by default

I have nodes data with a boolean to determine whether they should be expanded by default or not, but cant seem to get it to work with setExpanded or expandSomeNodes. Is there a way to have certain nodes open by default depending on this boolean? As a bonus is there a way to hide and prevent the collapsing of these nodes? How would I go about doing this? thanks
