Well, launchpad git is not really that hard to use. You do not need to have any association with launchpad to do:

git clone https://git.launchpad.net/cloud-init

I do realize that there is other usefulness of github and we do plan on getting a push-mirror here. I'm not expecting that we would take pull requests on github at the moment though. I'm not terribly interested in just adding duplicate work.

Thanks for filing the issue, for sure having some confusing content on github is not good.
