There is no screen showing on boot. Only an underscore blinking in the top right of the screen. I can access the tty and login from there but light dm is not working.

-$ lightdm --show-config

Confirm! I have the same problem under Manjaro. I have also to switch to tty2 and "startxfce4" in my case.

Here is my LightDM Config:

A session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession

Same issue here. When I run $ systemctl status lightdm.service I get a "Failed to start Light Display Manager" report. However, if I drop to a tty and then run either sudo lightdm or sudo systemctl start lightdm the greeter seems to load seemlessly.

I have also noticed that, on multiple reboots, lightdm manages to start in some occasions (rarely).

Might this be some kind of race condition? Any fixes? Might #17 have the blame?

Apparently it was indeed a race condition. I added this line to my lightdm.conf under [LightDM] and everything is working fine now: logind-check-graphical=true. With this, lightdm will wait until the graphics drivers are loaded before launching.

I'm also seeing this issue - lightdm starts before my graphics card is finished initializing (I think?) and so I just get dropped to tty - starting lightdm.service from a text tty then works perfectly.

Unfortunately the logind-check-graphical=true solution does not appear to fix it for me. I note in the log file:

[+0.00s] DEBUG: Monitoring logind for seats
[+0.00s] DEBUG: New seat added from logind: seat0

it doesn't appear to be delayed at all - the timestamp hasn't increased! Are there any other options for delaying lightdm startup? Do I need to yell at logind?

I still cannot avoid this issue to happen in Ubuntu 22.04. Is it solved or not by official configurations?
Seems like it is related to: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.15/gpu/drm-kms.html.

To fasten the kernel boot up time, quantites of graphic drivers and firmware are not longer integrated to initrd.img which greatly reduces the image loading time, but it introduces random possiblity so that lightdm may start up before graphic driver initialization is completed, resulting in black screen on /dev/tty7. I don't find any stable signal or notification to tell me when that graphic initialization is done, and logind-check-graphical=true doesn't work in my case. Does anyone know how to catch up that completion signal precisely?

Currently I am using an ugly way to make lightdm work, which is based on adding a constant timer (e.g. OnActiveSec=10sec) to force delay the boot up of lightdm. It is inefficient, and may not work other machines with different systemd performing progress.
