"Always open new tab for links" should only open new links for new websites, work for Bookmarks #26

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

The "always open links in new tab" does exactly what it says on the box and
nothing more. This is great, but it would be better if it would only open new
tabs when the link went to an external site. That is, I can follow link after
link on, say, code.google.com and no new links open at all, but once I follow a
link to github.com or slashdot.org a new tab opens. Different domain name =
new tab.

Additionally, the feature should affect Bookmarks as well. Clicking a bookmark
should always open in a new tab.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Using Chrome 11.0.696.25 beta on Win7 SP1 x64. Using most recent
chrome-toolbox available through extensions website.

This would be an awesome addition to chrome-toolbox. This is the one feature
that has kept me from migrating completely to Chrome. Firefox has the
TabMixPlus extension that provides this functionality.

I will work on a site and want all navigation and history to occur on that tab.
If I click a link that takes me to another site or I click a bookmarked link,
then I want it to open a new tab.

agree with the comments above as well. links within the same domain should
open in the active tab, and links which point to an external domain should open
to a new tab.

This is literally the only issue that keeps me from making the switch from
Firefox. What on earth is keeping you guys from upping your game???!!! Tab Mix
Plus for Firefox is where you guys need to be. Please get there soon.

To echo off the other comments, I wish to have new tabs open from not only URL
links, but also:
-bookmarks
-bookmark groups
-history

Having these features would make me switch from Firefox to Chrome

I recently switched from Mozilla to Chrome, but I am so disappointed that I
can't set my tabs to open according to my preference. Specifically:
1. When clicking on a link, have this link open in a new tab, BUT
2. DO NOT focus to that tab.

I do not want to have to hit Ctrl+click or right click the menu to "open in a
new tab."

Lastly, I read that if one middle clicks the mouse, it will open in a new tab.
Nothing happens when I middle click my mouse. (I have checked my mouse
settings; these seem to be working properly.)

Any help I may get, I greatly appreciate. Without the colored tabs option
offered in Mozilla and now this, I may return to Mozilla.

Thank you!

I just download Toolbox today and the purpose of this thread still has not been
resolved. It would be great to have links from a different domain open in a new
tab rather than ALL links open in a new tab. #7 Thomas has the features that
would most beneficial.

Thank you

It just seems incredible that Google is so dense on this issue and seems to be
actively hostile to the idea that we don't want them to destroy tabs. If you
ask the question on the web you get people telling you all the gyrations you
can go through to tell Chrome to open in a new tab. That is not the point! It
is not acceptable for Chrome to replace the content of the tab unless I perform
an action within that tab window (click a link).

A fitting analogy is a word processor program. If you were editing a document
and decided you needed to open another document to copy some text from it,
would it be acceptable under any circumstances that the word processor
discarded all of your edits and replaced the current document? Does it matter
if you can ctrl-click or some other gesture to tell it to not throw away the
document that you had open? The answer is no! It would never be acceptable for
opening a new file in a word processor to do anything other than open a new
window alongside the file you already had open.

Opening a bookmark is exactly analogous to opening a new document in a word
processor and clicking on a bookmark should ALWAYS open a new tab. There
shouldn't be an option to enable this behavior. It should always be the
default! Any other behavior is just thinking like back in the days before
browsers had tabs. Back in the days of Netscape there was no way to open in a
new tab, but this is not the 90's anymore.

Dude just click in your mouse wheel on a link and it opens in a new tab

I don't want to click my fucking mouse wheel asshole. Me, and the other
thousands of TabMixPlus users on Firefox want the extension to be intuitive and
only open links in new tabs if it's a new domain. Go fuck yourself with your
mouse wheel, k.

I am also a Firefox TabMixPlus user and would migrate to Chrome if it wasn't
for this "new tab for links to different domains" issue but is that language
absolutely necessary?

Also, mouse wheel does not work when you have a Macbook with a touchpad. I can
understand the frustration, but you are correct that the language is
inappropriate for this forum.

Sigh... like it even matters. This is a 2 year old forum full of frustrated
people and always will be. Nothing will come of this. I've been checking on it
since it opened in 2011. It's clear they don't care about their users... so
pardon me if I've stopped giving a crap.

And as if on cue!!! Pressing enter in address bar for new tab is now
completely broken in the new update of chrome. All foul language qualms
aside... real talk... they seriously, like.. really seriously, do not give a
shit about you or this extension. Makes me sad.

DavidDel nailed it. I starred this thread ages ago, with little to no hope that
it would ever actually get fixed. If you've ever created/starred an issue or
tried to get any support from Google you will quickly find out that Google
doesn't care about end users. Rather than holding my breath I switched back to
Firefox + Tab Mix Plus.

Chrome doesn't offer enough benefit *to me* to use it until this is fixed. When
I'm on my PC, I shouldn't have to click a middle mouse button when I don't want
to. On my laptop, I don't even have a middle button. I like a nice, consistent
browsing experience which Firefox offers me that Chrome does not.

For others, that's not the case. It all boils down to personal preference.

Would I like Chrome to let me decide how to open my tabs? Yes, very much. Will
it ever actually do that? Probably not. The one thing that should be painfully
obvious by now is that Google won't be fixing this any time soon. And even if
they do, there's no guarantee they won't take it away again on a whim (see
gReader).

Again, Google doesn't care about end users -- if you don't believe that, you
just haven't been burned enough by them yet. It's likely just a matter of time,
though.

Agreed, even the extensions that have worked in the past, break on new
versions. Those developers have stopped wasting their time. Although Google
supports multiple tabs, it seems that they want to make it as difficult as
possible for users to open new tabs when there is a logical algorithm we want
to apply, as in #7.
