Depends on #843

As suggested by @chris-rock . This would simplify our build chain and could potentially even improve the resulting package.

As per feedback of @metadave this may not be as feasible as we had assumed initially. Let's keep an eye on it, but close this for now. The current docker releases work in the meantime.
