I'd the same problem on arch after plug-in mobile internet device.
Do you use mobile?
When starting system with already pluged in mobile internet device network indicator was shown.
While trying to edit this (mobile) connection there was an error that "ppp configuration not found" in a config file (or somithing similar) so maybe that's a reason
Fixed this by making sure everything was installed under the Unity-For-Arch base repo and resolving some package conflicts. I had to end up removing gnome-shell to get it working.
