I don't see any mention of it in the settings. Do notifications need to be enabled in a feed for it to work?

Because I'm afraid of them getting in the way while I do a recording, I have alerts and sound notifications off, but I would like to be able to glance at the tray to know whether there have been new tweets since I last checked.

Tray icon only changes if notifications are muted, if you disable them completely on the website they won't get reported at all.

Could you clarify that comment? I'm a bit confused by it...I tried setting all of my columns' "alert" sections to "Desktop notifications", and I'm not seeing anything happen when I get a new tweet.

When you right-click in the window or on the tray icon, you can enable Mute notifications. Otherwise there's no way of knowing whether you read the notification or not, since it always displays in front of other windows if not muted.

So I can keep the "alerts" setting in the individual columns set to "none" the way I used to, and just enable the global mute via the tray icon, and then it'll work?

The columns have to be on Desktop Notifications, and when you unmute the tray icon will reset. I'll make it reset when you open the window, that's an oversight.

Okay, so all columns' "Alerts" set to "desktop notifications", and the program's "mute notifications" enabled?

Going to restart the program with these settings set this way and see what happens.

What do you mean by "when you unmute the tray icon will reset", though?

It will change when you get a notification while muted, and then change back to default when you unmute since that will show all the notifications you received in that time.

Oh, so it won't change back on its own once I've scrolled up to the top and caught up with the tweets, huh? Hm...seems like this feature is intended for a different use than what I'm looking for (tray icon change when there are unread tweets, change back to normal once every column is scrolled all the way up and/or cleared via the "clear" link with the raindrop-like icon next to it).

I'll add an option to set the behavior to always change the tray icon, and then it will get reset if you open the main TweetDeck window. Getting it to detect column clearing or scrolling is a bit too complex.

I can work with that. :)

Turns out TweetDeck doesn't post notifications unless either popup or audio is enabled, so the icon will only change if the column has either enabled. If you don't want popups, you can mute them and the icon will still update, it's a bit finicky but I can look into it a little bit more later.
