One could make a selfhosted location sharing webapp (I am mainly thinking about the upcoming Nextcloud maps app or the Hubzilla location sharing addon) that pulls the GPS data out of the specified database?

aTalk implementation of Geo-location is more than just a static map displaying of the user current locations. It is an active displaying of the "StreetView & map" and the recipient can view the received location in 360 degree, with view following the recipient device pointing direction.
The location sharing feature is very nice, but the dependency on google services isn't ideal.
