UniKey for Windows was first released as a free program in 1999. It quickly gained popularity thanks to its speed, simplicity, and reliability. It soon became, and still is the most popular keyboard program for Vietnamese language. Today, UniKey can be found in almost every Windows PC of Vietnamese people.
The core engine UniKey Vietnamese Input Method is open source and was first released as a part of the x-unikey Vietnamese keyboard for Linux in 2001. Since then, the engine has been integrated in input methods in different OSes and software frameworks. ibus-unikey (developed by Le Quoc Tuan, using UniKey engine) is widely used in Linux distributions.
From Mac OS X Leopard, released in 2007, Apple has integrated UniKey Vietnamese Input Method to the built-in Vietnamese input of Mac OS. From 2010, the engine has also been integrated to the built-in Vietnamese keyboard in iOS (starting from iOS 4.0). So the UniKey engine is now running in all iPhones, iPads that have Vietnamese input.

UniKey được công bố lần đầu tiên vào năm 1999. Ngay từ khi ra đời, UniKey đã được người dùng đón nhận rất tích cực nhờ tính đơn giản, tiện dụng, tốc độ, tin cậy. UniKey Vietnamese Input Method, module chính xử lý tiếng Việt (gồm các phương pháp gõ, thuật toán chuyển đổi tiếng Việt) trong UniKey, được open-source từ năm 2001. Bản open-source của UniKey chạy trên X-Window (Linux) được công bố từ năm 2001, dưới tên x-unikey. x-unikey là một trong những chương trình gõ tiếng Việt đầu tiên trên Linux. Từ source code x-unikey, UniKey Input Engine đã được sử dụng và tích hợp vào các bộ gõ tiếng Việt trên Linux sau này. Bộ gõ phổ biến nhất dùng lõi UniKey trên Linux hiện nay là ibus-unikey (do Lê Quốc Tuấn phát triển).
Từ năm 2006, tác giả UniKey đã cho phép Apple dùng source code x-unikey trong các sản phẩm của Apple theo các điều khoản của giấy phép The MIT license. Từ phiên bản Tiger, bộ gõ tiếng Việt có sẵn trên Mac OS X đã bắt đầu dùng lõi UniKey. Đến năm 2010, phiên bản iOS 4.0 cũng tích hợp lõi UniKey. Đến nay tất cả các thiết bị iPhone, iPad đều đang sử dụng UniKey cho bộ gõ tiếng Việt có sẵn.
