Description
I am running buildah on a raspberry pi. The binary is cross-compiled from commit 0187423.
If I try to run buildah as an unprivileged user, it loops forever and recurses into builda-in-a-user-namespace forever.
Running as root works as expected.
The parsing PID \"\": strconv.Atoi: parsing \"\": invalid syntax messages appear after I abort the execution by pressing Ctrl+C.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
I have no Idea if anyone can reproduce this on their own.

buildah not returning and going into an infinite recursion.
Describe the results you expected:
buildah working with an unprivileged user or at least gives an error message, that superuser privileges are required.

Does not apply since it is self compiled.

My kernel is self compiled from here . There are no kernel patches applied, only configuration parameters changed. If this looks like a kernel bug to you, I can supply the configuration of the kernel.

Hi @hesch , Were you able to reproduce this anywhere else. It looks like your kernel is self compiled so its hard to tell from here what is going wrong, but if you could share any small reproducer then it will be helpful.
From looking at the error it seems something is going wrong at lower-level when buildah re-execs itself and tries to read pid of the child process.
I did some debugging and found the source of the problem. While cross-compiling CGO_ENABLED was not enabled. This caused the unshare function of containers/storage to silently fail. I opened an Issue on the other repo and closing this one.
