What features are needed in a frequency analyser?

Some basic ones:

  • Selection of FFT window size (like the existing ones) but going up to something really big (like 64k or more).
  • Ability so "zoom on" or change the scale to see areas of interest in detail.
  • option to display phase as well as frequency
  • Selection of different windowing functions.

Take a look at the one in Adobe Audition - it's pretty good.

More advanced - build in a tone generator into it so that you can measure the frequency response of filters. If you make the signal repetition rate the same as the FFT size you don't need a windowing function, and you can get a really clean freq response.

(You can use any stimulus signal that has all frequencies, but the best is a swept sin with a log base.)

The Analyzer class in the SquinkyLabs repo has this (with no UI).

1.atleast 4 inputs (for 2x stereo).
2. various smoothing options (non, 20ms...) .
3. kaiser, hanning, blackman-harris and hamming windows
4. if u could add musical notes graphically on the frequency scale (like piano 🎹 keys) like the ones on Waves hybrid EQ would be marvelous (none of the current vcv ffts have it at the moment).
5. peak hold function please! 6. log and lin dB scales for cherry on the top

Of course the newest from Bogaudio is awfully full featured now.
