any chance there is a way for me to build and run minix 2. specifically 2 on this old ibm thinkpad 770z i found somewhere. because I want to follow along with the book.

any basic pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The instructions in the README should work --- you'll most likely want the combo 1440k floppy disk image from the releases page. Write that to a floppy and it should just boot and work. You can then install it to the hard disk, which will give you a basic setup.

Unfortunately I don't have a good solution yet for installing the build tools and source code, so you're on your own there. Probably the easiest thing to do is to run the hard drive image in a VM and copy all the developer tools onto floppies so they can be transferred to the Thinkpad.

Bear in mind that my setup is a bit different to the one in the book.

The combo floppy for minix 2.0.4 does not work - when one boots it up, no matter what one does, one is greeted only again and again and again by a login prompt.

When you say 'login prompt', do you mean the login: produced by the fully booted system or the boot prompt produced by the boot loader?

If you get the proper login prompt, then I have no idea why it would be failing like that. A screenshot might be useful.
