datetime columns not auto-adjusting to value length

This is an annoyance but really, there could be problematic ambiguity unless we manually expand the columns, which can become aggravating over time.

Why are they truncating the values? Shouldn't they auto-expand to the value as well as to the column name length? I'm not understanding the logic here.
