maintain state of the aside

I have a navigation hierarchy that I am trying to show in the aside panel, but the problem is every time the aside opens it refreshes the controller and thus the scope is not maintained, for my use case I want to show user his current position in hierarchy. Is there any way I can accomplish this using Aside?
