I had experimented time ago some troubles when for some reasons the date of my phone was wrong (ex. after a factory reset) in such situation after some minutes of total confusion, messages I was sending where not show in the chat view, until I realized it was the date was wrong, some friends had experimented the same issue and I had to send an SMS explaining them they have the date wrong because they think is Delta Chat that stopped working and don't realize the date issue.
If Delta Chat can't deal with wrong dates in a sane way, at least it should not allow users to send messages and/or show a warning if a self message was sent from a date in the future with respect to the current date.

This can be solved to a good extent by using the last message's sorting time as a lower bound for sorting in a newly received message. deltachat/deltachat-android#398

The remainig problem might only be that when moving back between timezones quickly after receiving a message, new messages may be sorted using dates a couple of hours in the future (a second behind the last message with the future time).
However:

  • The displayed time could still be correct.
  • This problem should go away shortly after the number of adjusted hours "traveled back in time" have passed.
  • The sorting corresponds to the receiving order.
