Yeah, my understanding is that the root cause here is that nixpkgs tries to track Stackage LTS as closely as possible and hnix (a dependency of dhall-nix) was removed from Stackage LTS. As a result, both dhall-nix and hnix were not being automatically curated by Stackage, which led to the problem you ran into (the hnix package build being marked broken in Nixpkgs).

It looks like this specific issue you linked to was fixed by correcting the hnix build and #10 tracks work to get both on Stackage to prevent this in the future, so I'll go ahead and mark this closed.
