Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Cita helps understand how items in a library relate to one another via citation links. However, discovering whether an item cites another item to support, refute, etc it (the citation reason) requires that one open the citing item, locate the citation and interpret its context.

Describe the solution you'd like

  • The citation editor should provide a field to provide a list of (controlled) citation reasons. This is related to Improve Citation Editor #57
  • The list of citations should provide visual information about the reason for citation for each of its citations.
  • This information should be synced with external sources of citation metadata that support this information:
  • Wikidata: Scholia already implements this using Wikidata's P3712 as qualifier of "cites work" statements.
  • OpenCitations: I'm not sure. It's ontology implements some of CiTO's object properties, but not all of them. Related to Support fetching references from OCC #134
  • Crossref: Apparently not supported.
  • Eventually, this information could be represented in the citation graph as well.

Additional context

  • This possibility was discussed in the original proposal.
  • Citation Typing Ontology, to describe the nature of reference citations.
  • The fact that Cita treats citations as objects makes it easier to add properties (such as an array of citation reasons/intentions) to them.
  • Zotero may support directional and labelled item relations in a future.
  • The Scite Zotero plugin already provides a per-item count of supporting/contrasting/mentioning incoming citations.
