Touch to unhide caption/toolbar works inconsistently

After the caption and toolbar hide themselves, at least on my Galaxy SIII when I tap to unhide them, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The problem happens consistently but not in any repeatable pattern.

I'm wondering if this is because if my thumb drags across the screen even a little bit while tapping, it's interpreted as the beginning of a swipe that doesn't go far enough to change the image, and never fires a tap event to unhide the caption and toolbar? I know my phone is registering something because the hardware menu/back buttons below the screen light up when I try to tap.
