Installing and Configuring NoCatSplash on the OpenWRT
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Written by Schuyler Erle <schuyler@nocat.net>
Last updated 2005-05-23
-----------
Quick Start
-----------
If you already have a working OpenWRT setup, you can install NoCatSplash with
the remote splash option as follows:
$ ssh root@<ip-of-OpenWRT>
# ipkg update
# ipkg install glib1 iptables kmod-iptables-extra
# wget http://nocat.net/~sderle/nocatsplash_0.93pre2-2_mipsel.ipk
# ipkg install nocatsplash_0.93pre2-2_mipsel.ipk
NoCatSplash should install without problems, and set up an init script in
/etc/init.d, to load splashd on boot. The final step is to configure
/etc/nocat.conf. The following nocat.conf entries need to be customized for
your community network:
SplashURL
SplashTimeout
AllowedWebHosts
The following nocat.conf entries need to be set for the OpenWRT hardware, *if*
you are not running OpenWRT on a Linksys WRT54G-type device. Otherwise the
defaults *should* suffice -- but if not, try fixing these first.
ExternalDevice
InternalDevice
Reboot the device and you're done.
------------------------------
Rebuilding the OpenWRT Package
------------------------------
If you need to rebuild the OpenWRT package for NoCatSplash - say, for example,
to make custom alterations to nocat.conf.in for your community network - you
will need to have an OpenWRT SDK or BuildRoot set up somewhere on your system.
When you are ready to rebuild NoCatSplash, increment the PKG_RELEASE variable
in ipkg/rules, and then run the following commands:
$ export TOPDIR=<path-to-buildroot>
$ cd NoCatSplash-vX.XX
$ ipkg/rules clean
$ ipkg/rules compile
The result should be a nocatsplash-*.ipkg in your $TOPDIR/bin/packages/
directory or whatever your local equivalent is. You can then simply upload the
ipkg file to the router device, configure it as above (if necessary), and
reboot.

Many thanks are due to Jo Walsh and Saul Albert for kicking my ass into making
this work. Thanks are also in order to Felix Fietkau for writing the original
OpenWRT build configuration for NoCatSplash, and to the OpenWRT developers in
general for making such a bad ass piece of software.
