Got my docker container up and running, setup my nginx proxy manager to allow the ports 25/143/587 updates my dns record with the dkim keys created the empty postfix-access.cf and postfix-recieve.cf I'm able to connect to the server and login with thunderbird, But then i am unable to send or recieve emails. It keeps saying have the wrong password, but I'm sure I've entered it correctly, and any time i try the other password times, plain/encrypted etc, it says the server wants the plain password. here are the logs of the container booting, me connecting with thunderbird, and then me attempting to send an email via thunder bird. |

Afaik NPM only supports HTTP(S). Edit: TIL this can be done with "streams" in NPM. |

actually i did it with both http's and streams, each seems to allow thunderbird to connect. But neither seems to be able to send the message, Nor does using both resolve it. |

I would start with a basic setup and once that is working, start adding other things like NPM.
This looks like you did not provide a domain for the "admin" user? You probably want something like |

Still been trying to get this to work off and on since may. I have done every combination of port, port stream, reverse proxy naming, mx record, spf record, I've tried using the basic compose and no matter what i do i get stuck with being able to login to the account, it seeing the server, and it hanging up when it tries to send an email.
i try and send an email to myself, it sits trying for a long time then give the error. I've setup every port in question to be able to stream to the server bypassing the reverse proxy. I've opened every port on my router i setup reverse proxies for the smtp and imap ports in case they were needed I've created the dkim files and loaded the records to my DNS, for this im using go daddy. i have been trying to get this to work for months, and I have no clue what it is Im doing wrong. |

First get this working locally, I can connect with Thunderbird to a local instance and all I had to do was expose the port and edit my Once you get that working, then run it externally, then add in NPM if you want that.
Those says they're for HTTP, none of those ports should be configured for that. Also note that ports 25 and 587 speak StartTLS, any reverse proxy needs to handle that AFAIK. Port 465 should work (uses normal TLS). |

I'm running thunderbird on a windows pc, and the mailserver on a headless linux server, I can't get thunderbird to accept an ip address or the computer name as the hostname to connect to. also for reference here is the docker compose for the basic recommended install. |

I'm unfortunately stretched for time to assist you any further. I can assure you that I recently had success getting Thunderbird to connect to a DMS container (I just used Perhaps you should start with that simpler setup before you broaden it to the real environment you're trying to get it working with. Start small and work upwards. |

At this point I'd be willing to pay somebody $50 to help me get this working. I'm telling it to connect to the server via the IP address but thunderbird complains the incoming port already exists. But I've made sure to remove all previous records from thunderbird. I got the letsencrypt cert working and got thunderbird to recognize both ports as starttls, but it only did it once, then the imap stopped reporting it was starttls and I can't get it to do it again. The few times it did work it complained the user didn't exist, but I've trippled checked that it was there. |

Ok, I think i see whats causing the issue, but i don't know whats causing it. In the server I've created the admin@penguinarmy.club account in Thunderbird I'm entering the admin@penguinarmy.club but when the server tries to process the login its only seeing the user name and not the full email. Thunderbird tries multiple attempts to login, after 3 fail2ban kicks in and bans the IP Im access the server from , which causes the imap connection to no longer report its starttls status. this is because thunderbird by default changes the username its using for authentication to just the user part of the email address, unless you manually over ride it.
I have no clue how many months I have been scratching my head around this issue, but I'm glad to have finally solved it. I've been able to successfully log in, and connect to the server with thunderbird now. |
