Running Docker on Windows Server documentation is broken #18538
Comments
Thanks for opening the issue @jpulakka, this has now been fixed |
Sorry, but how has this been fixed? I see is that https://docs.docker.com/desktop/faqs/windowsfaqs/#how-do-i-run-windows-containers-on-windows-server has been removed, but the second link in https://github.com/docker/labs/blob/master/windows/windows-containers/README.md is still broken. Also https://docs.docker.com/desktop/faqs/windowsfaqs/#can-i-run-docker-desktop-on-windows-server ("running Docker Desktop on Windows Server is not supported") is in contradiction with https://github.com/docker/labs/blob/master/windows/windows-containers/README.md where the first step to run Docker on Windows Server is to install Docker Desktop - although it's not clear if that's relevant only for Windows 10, and "Docker Enterprise Engine" (broken link) should be installed on Windows Server instead. |
Created #18604 to get this fixed properly. |

Description
https://docs.docker.com/desktop/faqs/windowsfaqs/#how-do-i-run-windows-containers-on-windows-server links to https://github.com/docker/labs/blob/master/windows/windows-containers/README.md , which describes steps
Docker EE is apparently some obsolete product. Also step 1) is somewhat contradictory with https://docs.docker.com/desktop/faqs/windowsfaqs/#can-i-run-docker-desktop-on-windows-server which says

Suggestion
Describe how to run Docker on Windows Server in 2023. A random blog post https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/itops-talk-blog/docker-desktop-and-windows-what-s-the-best-option-for-you/ba-p/3851656 describes three options, Moby/DockerCE seems to be the preferred one. Also https://operavps.com/docs/configure-docker-on-windows-server/ describes a couple of approaches.
