Artist: Ryan Adams
Song: Juli
Album: Prisoner B-Sides (2017)
Transcription: Sean Eidemiller [seidemiller@gmail.com] (2022)
Instrument: Guitar I and II
Tuning: E standard, capo 5nd fret
Key: Am/C
Length: 3:53
==== Notes ====
I would say that this song modulates in key between Am and C. Obviously those are relative keys and
they share the same set of notes, but in some parts the Am feels like the root and in other parts
the C feels like the root.
Guitar I is playing the rhythm (chords) in the left channel and Guitar II is playing the melody
lines and the arpeggios in the right channel. Both sound Fender-ish to me, with Guitar II in
particular sounding very much like a Jazzmaster (or possibly a Strat).
Reminder: all fret numbers relative to the capo.
==== [0:00] Intro ====
-- Guitar I --
The basic chord progression here is Am > C > Dm, and the strumming pattern is easy enough to
follow. I believe the voicings are as follows...
Am C6(11) Dm
e|-0--------0--------0--------|
B|-0--------1--------1--------|
G|-0--------0--------2--------|
D|-2--------0--------2--------|
A|-2--------2--------0--------|
E|-0--------3-----------------|
It also sounds like he occasionally adds the flat 7 to the Dm, making it Dm7. For example...
Dm7 Dm Dm7 Am
e|-0-----0---0-0----0----0---...---|
B|-1-----1---1-1----1----0---...---|
G|-0h2---2---2-2----0----0---...---|
D|-2-----2---2-2----2----2---...---|
A|-0-----0---0-0----0----2---...---|
E|-----------------------0---...---|
-- Guitar II --
Clean-ish with reverb/delay and possibly chorus? Let notes ring out.
NOTE: Doesn't come in on the ONE beat; listen for timing.
*possibly a pull-off
e|-------------------------3---2------------------------------------------------|

G|----------------------------------------------------------2p0-------0---------|

D|-----0-------0-----0--------2-2-----2-----2---0------0---...---|
A|---2---2------------------0--(0)--0-----0----------------------|
E|-3-------3-------3------6-----------------------0--------------|
NOTE: Comes in just before the ONE in the next line.

==== [0:36] Verse I ====
-- Lyrics --
We watched the coast burn into the sun
And the light fades, (the) train's rollin' on
-- Guitar I --
The chord progression changes to C > Dm here, and, at least in this part, the Dm is always a Dm7.
Again, the strumming pattern is easy enough to follow. Isolate the left channel if you need to
hear it more clearly.
C6(11) Dm7
e|-0--------0--------|
B|-1--------1--------|
G|-0--------0--------|
D|-0--------2--------|
A|-2--------0--------|
E|-3-----------------|
-- Guitar II --
Silent.
==== [0:54] Pre-Chorus I ====
-- Lyrics --
Rollin' on
Just rollin' on
-- Guitar I --
Chord progression: F > C > Dm, again with occasional hammer-ons and pull-offs to affect a Dm/Dm7,
though I think I'm mainly hearing Dm7 in this part.
NOTE: In live renditions, he also sometimes pulls-off on the 2nd string of the C chord (after a few
beats), making it a plain old C6. This may be happening on the studio recording as well, but it's a
lot more obvious/apparent when played live.
F C6(11) Dm7

Same chords as Intro (Am > C > Dm); similar strumming pattern with minor variations.

==== [2:20] Bridge ====
NOTE: This part gets a bit muddy and cluttered in the mix with all the reverb, delay, and increased
saturation. Below is what I play, but it may not be exactly what Ryan played on the recording. I
very much doubt that he plays it the same way every time in any case, though. It's also possible
that there's an additonal (electric) guitar here. Especially when the vocals come in at 2:37, I'm
pretty sure we're hearing two distinct guitars in the right channel -- one playing arpeggios and
another playing the "lead" line. There's definitely an acoustic guitar here as well, which I
haven't transcribed (simple chords; simple pattern).
Anyway, again, below is what I play...
-- Lyrics --
"Juli" twice, beginning at 2:37.
-- Guitar I --
Progression: F > G > Am, with the following voicings...
Fmaj7 Gadd11 Am
e|-0--------2--------0--------|
B|-0--------3--------0--------|
G|-0--------0--------0--------|
D|-2--------0--------2--------|
A|-3-----------------2--------|
E|-------------------0--------|
You could also play the G somewhat differently, and Ryan seems to do this on occasion in live
footage...
