## Remarks
The <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object is used to represent a single membership user in the Active Directory membership data store. It exposes information about the membership user such as the email address, and provides functionality for the membership user such as the ability to change or reset their password.
An <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object is returned by the application's membership provider whenever the application is configured to use an Active Directory data store. In an application that can be configured to use different data stores, or in an application that uses multiple data stores, you can refer to the base class, <xref:System.Web.Security.MembershipUser>. Because the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object does not implement the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser.LastActivityDate%2A> and <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser.LastLoginDate%2A> properties, you must be prepared to handle the <xref:System.NotSupportedException> that is thrown when these members are accessed on an <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object.
The <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> class implements internal optimizations used by the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider> class to minimize the number of attribute updates that occur when calling the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.UpdateUser%2A> method. It also serializes the <xref:System.Security.Principal.SecurityIdentifier> representation (available in the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser.ProviderUserKey%2A> property) so that an <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object can be serialized and deserialized without throwing exceptions.
A <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object is returned by the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.GetUser%2A> and <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.CreateUser%2A> methods or as part of a <xref:System.Web.Security.MembershipUserCollection> returned by the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.GetAllUsers%2A>, <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.FindUsersByName%2A>, and <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.FindUsersByEmail%2A> methods.
An <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object is required by the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.UpdateUser%2A> method when you want to update the information for an existing membership user.

Because the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> object that underlies the <xref:System.Web.Security.MembershipUser> object returned by the membership provider does not implement the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser.LastActivityDate%2A> and <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser.LastLoginDate%2A> properties, the code first checks the type of the user object returned from the membership provider before displaying the contents of those properties.

## Remarks
The <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser> value for a membership user is checked during the call to <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.ValidateUser%2A> by the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider>. If the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipUser.IsApproved%2A> property returns `false`, the <xref:System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider.ValidateUser%2A> method returns `false` even if the supplied user name and password are correct.
