This seems like a crate I need and I was wondering if I could help out. I did some stuff on a side project of mine

Since I saw an issue comment from rpm-rs/rpm#176 (comment), I rather help out to avoid duplicate work.

The main thing that comes to mind is updateinfo support being unfinished. I believe there were a few bugs w/r/t publishing metadata as well, but I imagine you're mostly interested in reading the metadata, which works well for the most part.
