I want to re-create a blazon for Nicholas Blackburn of York (died 1432). It is given in a couple of sources as 'Gules, a lion rampant checky ermine and ermines, crowned and armed or'. Unusually this blazon is shown on a stained glass window at All Saints, York, which was created while he was alive (Below) so this is how he wanted it to be displayed. As you can see from the blazon, shield and his wife's surcoat each of the squares in the 'checky ermine and ermines' are presented more like: 'a square ..., charged with an ermine spot ...'.
Drawshield does not present it in this way.

  • Is it possible to have Drawshield Present 'checky ermine and ermines' in this way, with each ermine spot in a separate square?

Note that this is not a unique feature. I've found a similar representation of 'checky ermine and ermines, a chevron or' for John Sourby in Foster's 'A Tudor Book of Arms'.

This book also has other examples of ermine on treatments or divisions, such as 'a chief vair ermine and ermines' in the blazon for Richard Verney. This looks more like Drawshield's 'plumetty' with ermine spots instead of feather patterns.
Wylam Bedford's 'barry of 12 ermine and ermines' has the ermine spots separated on each barry, as does James Bedford for bars.

I'm less interested in these variations but included them as they may be possible to do if the 'checky ermine and ermines' can be sorted.

Drawshield is an awesome tool by the way. Many Thanks.

Nicholas Blackburn and his wife Margaret, East Window, All Saints Church, York, about 1430.

Interesting! Thanks for raising this. This is probably a bit fiddly to code up but I'll have a look and report back.
