can't send/receive messages after reconnect

When pidgin first starts up, it runs fine all day, but after I suspend for the evening and resume the next day, it usually ends up in a broken state where I can't send or receive messages. The guifications plugin does send me popups when I get messages, they just don't appear in the message window.
