Search ignores routing

I'm on Bolt 5.4.14 and Bolt navigation v1.0.3

When I want to search for a content type let say company/company-name

It throws a 500 server error.
Uncaught PHP Exception Symfony\Component\String\Exception\InvalidArgumentException: "Invalid UTF-8 string." at /Users/timwolf/projects/wits5/wits/vendor/symfony/string/UnicodeString.php line 40

If I start typing with / and start typing again results will show up, also when I backspace suddenly normal search starts working.

When I finally find companies/thenameofthecompany it adds it wrong. It does the default contenttypeslug as set in the contenttypes.yml and then the ID of the content.
