Previously `sync/ atomic` was used to read/update the status but this led to a range of potential deadlocks, and workarounds to avoid these, which made the code difficult to follow. This test contained a race condition. Also as per the docs "FailNow must be called from the goroutine running the test or benchmark function, not from other goroutines created during the test.".
