A pretty small but very vocal minority of #haskell users (ok, one, Yitzchak Gale) object strongly to the use of (%) for anything other than its one true purpose in Data.Ratio.
He did offer up a viable alternative in the form of (&) though.
Sadly this costs the consistency between (%~) and (%) where the former is "mod-equals" and the latter is the operator it is the use of, but it avoids the conflict.
