Using 5.1

The UI does not display any error message when it can't find the index pattern. The UI should display an error message with useful information. In this case, Kibana is unable to find a matching index pattern because the logged in user does not have sufficient permissions to search for indices.

I'm not sure I understand. The screenshot you posted in this issue includes the message that we show to users in this situation: "Unable to fetch mapping. Do you have indices matching the pattern?"

The error is in the button, which clearly isn't obvious enough. I also find this interaction pretty clunky and I've been using it for years. Tagging with design so they can take a look.

This was mostly fixed when @cjcenizal updated this page. @cjcenizal looking at your implementation, you might want to use an warning color or small callout for the text (which itself is clear).
