Kibana version: 7.8.0

Elasticsearch version: 7.8.0

Server OS version:

Browser version:

Browser OS version:

Original install method (e.g. download page, yum, from source, etc.):

Description of the problem including expected versus actual behavior:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Populate the kibana.index in the setting with a value such as kibanaindex/.
We expect an index called kibanaindex will be created.

https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/current/settings.html

Kibana uses an index in Elasticsearch to store saved searches, visualizations, and dashboards. Kibana creates a new index if the index doesn’t already exist. If you configure a custom index, the name must be lowercase, and conform to the Elasticsearch index name limitations. Default: ".kibana"
  1. Check what actually happens:
You get an alias kibanaindex created pointing to an new index created.

Errors in browser console (if relevant):

Provide logs and/or server output (if relevant):

Describe the feature:

It looks like the documentation has not been updated about the fact Kibana is using aliases.
Could we update the documentation about this? It is confusing as it stands.
