We currently fetch the string to be used as artifact version from the version.yml file.
A suffix of -SNAPSHOT can be added by setting the RELEASE environment variable.

To facilitate the promotion of artifacts to GA it's also desirable to configure the version qualifier (e.g. "alpha1") at build time.
