Description

When a tilde(~) is shown in code view it appears more like a dash - than a tilde. This is ambiguous and a poor experience.

image

Steps to reproduce

send a message using a tilde such as ctrl + ~

I would expect to be able to easily differentiate tildes from dashes.

Platform Info

  • Using the desktop app
  • riot-web version: 1.5.3
  • Windows 10 version 1903

Recipients have said it appears normal to them. and they are also running version 1.5.3

It is just using the Inconsalata font which is considered to be a very legible monospaced font

@t3chguy Have you looked at the example in the bug report? The Inconsolata font has a clear curve in it's Tilde which is displayed on other devices correctly. However my machine displays it as a flat line like the dash.

To clarify, others see: Tilde_Correct

Where as I see: Flat_Tilde

I can easily reproduce this on Windows too:

(unless you happen to realize that tildes will be at the top, it's almost impossible to tell the difference).

I suspect the font isn't loading correctly for some reason.

I second this issue, but more generally, I find the rendering of the monospace font on Windows to be very poor and eye-straining.
