I've recently started using Matrix with the Element desktop client, being a longtime IRC user.
Even though I have a reasonably strong computer (i5-7600K CPU, 16 GB memory) and not much going on in the background - there is still noticeable lag in the UI's response in some cases. It's not long, but it's noticeable. Now, it's possible that I'm perceiving lag when it's actually intentional very-short animations (which I can't turn off?) - but it feels nowhere as snappy as an IRC client.
Steps to reproduce
This is not about a specific scenario - it's the general sense of responsiveness or lack thereof.

I have the same problem - the app generally feels terribly laggy on Pop!_OS 20.10. When I use my mouse, it feels like molasses has grabbed my cursor.
The version of Element I'm using is Element version: 1.7.29
olm version: 3.2.3
