Description

A very common thing to do is invite people to Matrix and invite them to a room directly after they joined. At the moment this is very cumbersome as the invite to room interface is not up to date with recently contacted users. In my case it only shows my 3 first ever contacts although I have contacted more people. The auto-complete while typing is very slow and shows completely random people.
Example: I just added somebody named Max, typing Max in the room invite box results in "No results". After a 5 seconds delay get suggestions of users that are completely strange and unaffiliated to me on home servers that I have never interacted with.
In my opinion the UX is completely broken and almost provides no value. To invite at the moment I have to click on a user name (in people list) open room info, click on about people, click on the username again then double click on her handle to select and copy to clipboard. Then switch to the room, click room info, click people, click invite and paste the handle.

Steps to reproduce

  • add a new contact
  • open room settings -> invite
  • start typing name of new contact
  • no results

Describe how what happens differs from what you expected.

As I am setting up many rooms for a small (30 users) organization i would like to have a better interface to add users to rooms. I expect to see a full list of my contacts ordered by frequency of interaction, where recently added to my contacts could be more significant (with a time decay) than messages sent. Furthermore I think user invite should not be hidden in room info -> people.
