A way to conveniently identify nodes without relying on DNS

Build in a way to set DNS-like names for nodes when defining remoting that doesn't depend on that name being defined in DNS. This will require some sort of name info propagation and synchronisation between the nodes on a network using some gossip-like mechanism.
