A segment that gives the the new mail count from a GMail account or even better IMAP.

this will be interesting, but possibly not easy (or even possible with bash, not sure), maybe will have to resort to Python/Ruby. and have you thought about how one stores username/password.
I personally wouldn't want to have it written down in a config file in $HOME
