YouCompleteMe unavailable: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0x80 in position 0: invalid start byte #181

I'm getting the above error upon vim startup on Ubuntu 16.04 and including supertab. When i remove supertab from my .vimrc, the error disappears. It seems that YouCompleteMe doesn't like non-UTF8 characters in global variables, please see the related issue: ycm-core/YouCompleteMe#2127
