The main value of day/night mode is cater for different lighting conditions, especially outdoors where the app is designed to be used.
It doesn't make sense that if the screen is hard to read, the user has to fumble to find the settings button (which is also hard to see) to then try and find the day/night mode switch.
Think of it like the headlights switch in in a car. Imagine if you had to first open the glovebox to turn the lights on or off.
This looks good and ideal for release 1. Today is rainy with bursts of sunshine here in Melbourne and as I walked down the street with the app and passed under a large section of trees, I needed to toggle the display to see the arrow and text. After passing the trees, i switched back. 'Blind' access to this button is essential (because you are effectively blind when the lighting conditions change).
Move day / night toggle option to settings view.
