It would be great to have extra flag to properly daemonize geth, so geth can be started during OS bootup and be ready to use.

That ticket is a feature request (I made it now clear in subject).

I imagine extra option geth --daemon.

+1 on this.

it's really weird that this functionality wasn't implemented yet.

I had to run geth in really weird way, just in case anyone needs, here is an init script for geth (for debian wheezy):

If my vote means anything, please implement a daemon. Increasing simplicity for those of us looking to run headless nodes on minimalistic equipment (RPi etc) can only be a good thing.
