A textfield with the slider would be really good because the user might want to commit to a more specific value than the slider returns but the slider is a good way to get a feel for the 'big picture' and scale of the instance object. For example a user might want to create an object with 'Golden Section' proportions but when she has it the right scale she may then need to adjust the dimensions to a unit size such as standard bricks.
