Apologies if this is a silly very basic Linux question
I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my laptop to develop thses ideas.
I have created a micro SD card which powers the EV3 brick and gets to the welcome screen and the flashing orange lights
But I have no idea how to set up the host laptop PC to communicate with it.
I don't see any reference to usb0 anywhere in the linux files on my laptop
I am sure I am missing something very basic to Linux, but as I said I am really an absolute beginner in Linux (although this is my third attempt in over 50 years of playing with computers)

Check out the page on Linux USB networking and then let us know what you tried, what you expected, and what you saw...

Hi again.. I found this closed post: #63 I am not at the "ev3 booting screen" and have been for the last 2 hours.. it says that it takes a while the first time.. the question is exactly how long is a while? only then can I get back to the point where I am trying to network again..

"A while" should be a few minutes, not hours. Which SD card image did you download? You can find my most recent test images here

@ashleylid

That's the image I am using.. Test Release 2014-05-19.. And I cant get past the booking screen..

Nope.. I downloaded the image again.. went through all the motions - and still not getting past the boot screen.. can see a penguin ev3dev booting - and that's all..

Ok.. it has gotten to the screen that says "" and when I push one of the buttons I get to another screen that says "INIT: version 2.88 booting INIT: No inittab file found" and "Enter runlevel: " Cant seam to get past this now..

Can I ask what size sd Card you are using, is it Class4 or Class 10, and what application/command you used to burn the image?

Also, are you burning the image on a Windows machine or a Mac/Linux machine?

@klienash, please open up a new issue so we don't get mixed up with @TonyReese - if the root cause of your issue is different than Tony's we want to close it separately.

@TonyReese - are you still having issues?

@ashleylid

@rhempel please see issue #65 - I have moved over there.. and still struggling..

Apologies for the time it has taken me to come back to this - I have had other time-consuming obsessions to deal with! - I am still at the same position as I was in January, and hope to try again soon. Thanks for your patience in leaving this still open.
