They are not alternatives. The main point of esbuild is production builds while pax is explicitly only for development. See also #2 for a previous discussion.

Thanks for the answer, esbuild looks more mature compared to pax and swc!

An update on this: the author of pax has since mysteriously deleted the repo linked above. I assume this means it's probably no longer a good idea to use pax even for development?
