Instead of having darken / lighten variant of each color in palette, we might follow @Una's suggestion to use filter: brightness().

Worth a try :)

Also keep in mind working with hsla() for automated color palette, as demonstrated by Sara Soueidan.

hsla() is way more convenient for the job, since filter affects the entire element (both text and background), which is bad for contrast fine tuning.
