Flameshot Version

Flameshot v12.1.0 (96c2c82)
Compiled with Qt 5.15.2
winnt: 10.0.19045
windows: 10

Installation Type

Linux, MacOS, or Windows Package manager (apt, pacman, eopkg, choco, brew, ...)

Operating System type and version

Windows 10 22H2

Description

Flameshot's blur tool doesn't seem to work stably compared to similar tools. It's too weak. If you apply the blur tool to the text once, the text will still be readable. To completely hide the text, you must apply the blur tool on the text a minimum of three times. This looks like a bug.

Please see the results of other editing tools below for comparison. The built-in blur tool of other editing tools hides all the text the first time, making it unreadable. To solve the problem, the intensity of the existing blur tool needs to be increased.

Thank you for opening the issue, but this is not a bug. In general, blurring is not a good privacy protector:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305423573_On_the_Ineffectiveness_of_Mosaicing_and_Blurring_as_Tools_for_Document_Redaction

There are already some software that can use some machine learning to de-blur the image and get the content out.

In Flameshot we do not suggest using blur for privacy but rather to attract the focus of the viewer to other parts. If you want to protect your privacy, you can use pixelate tool. It is activated when the size of the blur tool is increased. I personally suggest using a pixel size that is larger than your line height (read this #2439):
