Most applications that support vector objects allow to select those objects by clicking on them with a according tool.

Have i overlooked it?

Openboard does this pretty smoothly.. but that should not replace the "select strokes in an area" feature already present..

Yes, it could be either an option besides the current rectangle and polygon selection or just added to rctangle selection, when you click instead of drag.

And maybe a 4th selction mode where you can draw a line and select everything that corsses the line. (in inkscape is this possible by pressing alt-key in selection mode)

Both the suggested "apiece" and the intersecting path selector modes are now implemented
