We need a 'cool' (and pronounceable) name for the open source functions project. The name could be anything so feel free to brainstorm. Add your ideas as comments on this issue.

Primary Attributes:

  • Small
  • Lightweight
  • Fast
  • Powerful
  • Building Block
  • Next Generation
  • Connecting
  • Foundation

I kind of like where you're going with the composition concept.

atomic

  • (of a substance) consisting of uncombined atoms rather than molecules.
    "atomic hydrogen"
  • of or forming a single irreducible unit or component in a larger system.
"a society made up of atomic individuals pursuing private interests"

Maybe EFS (enterprise functions service), pronounced as Efes (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephesus).

Thinking along the lines of neurophysiology, dendrite

  • Dendrites (from Greek δένδρον déndron, "tree"), also dendrons, are the branched projections of a neuron that act to propagate the electrochemical stimulation received from other neural cells to the cell body, or soma, of the neuron from which the dendrites project. Electrical stimulation is transmitted onto dendrites by upstream neurons (usually their axons) via synapses which are located at various points throughout the dendritic tree. Dendrites play a critical role in integrating these synaptic inputs and in determining the extent to which action potentials are produced by the neuron.

"fn" is just so fn awesome. it's a verb, it's a noun, it's a participle. i think if we said it right people would even go so far as to call it (phonetic) "effin" instead of saying "functions". imaginary convo:

me: have you used "effin" from oracle?

newb: no. what is "effin" ?

me: oh ya know it's like oracle's "functions"

newb: oh cool but very dicey name

do it live!

On the molecule/atomic train, reactor. I know there's a few projects out there with that name, but it's still kinda cool.

@rdallman love fn. I do not want to get rid of that as our CLI. hopefully that works in.

@derekschultz like where you're going with neuro path. Axon, synapse, or neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine.

I'm also with @rdallman. I like the idea of an FN related name. It's awesomely minimal! If we claim FN is an acronym for "Function " what would N be? Nexus, Network, Neuron (@derekschultz)

Or come up with meanings for variants like EFN, EFFN that are still pronounced "effen"?

@rdallman

In gitlab by @treeder on Jun 21, 2017, 11:54

I'm down with fn, it's sort of what we call it now anyways. Doesn't have to be an acronym though, fn is an abbreviation for function (look at your keyboard).

But if it were an acronym, it could be a recursive acronym like gnu, which would be cool.

fn = "fn's not functions" :)

@treeder So if the project were simply FN then fn.io would be the ideal domain name but there's a squatter who owns it. We need someone who's not traceable to Oracle to contact the owner to get the price.

I'm kind of going back on using fn as a name. It's just not that cool of a name, if you put yourself in an outsider's shoes that just heard about it.

All made up and were not cool...

Hey how about we bring back the OG name.... Titan .. short for titanium, also this:

"members of the second generation of divine beings, descending from the primordial deities and preceding the Olympian deities"

Also it's not really used in any tech projects other than tiny/dead stuff.

  • Axion
