French word is "photo" and not "photographie"

I've never heard anyone say that he took "photographies", instead everybody in France says that he took "photos".

Le 14 octobre 2014, Annie n'a pas pris de photographies.
Le 14 octobre 2014, Annie n'a pas pris de photos.

Even the google query for "prendre des photographies" only returns results with "photos": https://www.google.com/search?q=prendre%20des%20photographies&gws_rd=ssl

I believe this is grammatically correct, "photo" is just a short for "photographie". It's not commonly used, but I hear it sometimes, in Quebec.

Just out of curiosity, according to this online dictionary, they've put "photo" as an abbreviation of "photographie":

"photo(s)" is correct too. It is not very formal though... In my opinion, "photo(s)" is OK to use verbally, but I would not use it when writing. I also thought about using the word "cliché", but then I preferred the word "photographies".

This is bad news, I'm going to have to change the word "photo" to "photographie" everywhere on the French version of Facebook! (Joking :p)
