Pretty much the SUBJ. When I mouse over the FireTray's TB icon I've got tray icon tooltip saying "thunderbird" popup way out of position: instead being near the icon/mouse position and slightly to the top popup shows up far to the left and a bit more-than-would-be-optimal to the top.

What version of GTK are you using ?
Your problem looks like http://www.gtkforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=8440.
Are other GTK applications (like pidgin, parcellite, redshift for ex.) also behaving the same way ?

It looks like this:
Looks like this

[lexa2@lx2linux ~]$ rpm -q gtk2
gtk2-2.22.0-1.fc8.1.i686

I don't use Gtk-based apps much, most frequently used apps which resort to Gtk are xulrunner-based (Firefox, Thunderbird) and SWT-based Eclipse. There are some native Gtk apps which "reside" in system tray though, namely StarDict and Dropbox. Both have no problems with tooltips similar to that I have with Thunderbird 8 + Firetray 0.4.0a3. Desktop environment I use here is pretty old - KDE 3.5.10 I had self-compiled from slightly modified sources (most modifications are simply fixes to make it compile with fresh versions of various libs, gcc, e.t.c.) so that's might be problem trigger. Plans are move into compiling and using TDE 3.5.13 but I can't bet how much time would pass until I would finally find enough free time and proceed with this "DE upgrade". Nevertheless, as I've got no problems with other Gtk+ apps and their system tray icon tooltips - I assume that FireTray does something differently than other apps do which triggers problematic behavior.

P.S. Wrong tooltip placement isn't happening every time - sometimes I've got tooltip placed right where I expect it to be - directly to the right and slightly downwards the point mouse cursor targets at.
